Dave A Posted September 23 Posted September 23 Hi all, first post and looking for some advice pls. I wanted to run a network cable from the bedroom to downstairs. When I lifted the floor boards I was happy to see that there were some existing drilled holes, so used them to run the cable. Browsing the forum last night I read that, for UK code, holes should be in the middle of the joist. The joists are 180mm x 50mm. The holes vary between 20mm to 50mm from the top of the joist to the top of the hole, and are all 20mm in diameter. All holes are approx 700mm from the supporting wall and the full span is 3500mm wall to wall. So from reading other forum posts they seem to be in the safe zone, first third of the span, and would probably be classed as a notch due to their high position in the joist. (Sorry for the long list of measurements, I’m trying to anticipate the questions you may ask!) As the title says, should I be worried? I’ll take on most diy jobs but have no experience with anything structural. So is there anything I can do to strengthen them for peace of mind? I normally use the “belt and braces” approach to most jobs, so would probably be happier doing something now I know it’s not up to code. 🙂 Or should I just screw down the floorboards, make a coffee and forget about it. 😁 Any advice will be welcome and thanks in advance. .

Put the floorboards down and make a coffee 😉 Whats the joist spacing - they look quite close together in the picture but maybe that's the camera/phone lens 1
Dave A Posted September 23 Author Posted September 23 Thanks Super Paulie, makes me fell a bit better👍 Hi Marshian, you caught me out, the only measurement I missed! The joist spacings are between 370mm and 400mm center to center. Thanks for the replies guys, I’ve got to pop out for a bit so will check in later. Cheers for now.
