Retrofit in a basement flat - where to start

Hi all,

 

Silly question time...

 

I'd like to install an MVHR in our flat but I'm wondering where to start.  I've got a quotation and high level design from BPC for our 53 square metres which has locations for the vents in the rooms.  

 

I'm sort of at a loss as to how to go about fitting the ducting.  I think I need to understand the space I have above the ceiling, so it's a case of cutting a hole along the proposed route and seeing what's there?  I'm trying not to think about if there's no space between the plasterboard ceiling and the joists, what would be my options there, drilling holes through the joists or have some area of the ceiling lowered?
