fixing uneven stone pieces to exterior wall

looking for guidance 

 

my firepond is now going to be covered on outside with bits of granite  like slips but uneven on the rear  and textured

most of them are not flat on the rear 

so what is the best stuff to use and how thick a bed can ican use 

 

vertical fixing of course
