martynjl
We want to remove the entire rear wall of a old stone cottage, build an extension and reroof the whole thing as one. We will be getting a SE to do calcs at some point but trying to get my head around even if it's possible. Cottage has 500mm thick stone walls, we want to build an extension and take out the entire rear wall, and have one apex roof supported by existing wall and new extension wall. Making the current rear wall of the house redundant and the whole thing can be removed. I then intend to either use posi joists spanning the entire width or put a steel in to support floor joists. The top will be open plan bedrooms. Im worried about lateral support to end walls due to it being stone and not having the ability to bolt any windposts to it. Does a 500mm thick wall even need lateral support? The only way I can think of doing this, is to leave a 600mm return on each corner. But Not ideal as then we'd have wall jutting out in the middle of new bedrooms. Does anyone have any experience with this kind of thing?
