retrospective-build Posted January 24, 2023 Share Posted January 24, 2023 (edited) I'm currently in the planning phase of a DIY MVHR installation in my loft. I'm looking at where to position the intake and exhaust on the house. I was hoping to install them just below the roof line, but the roof tiles come down so low in the loft that I don't think this will be an option. So, I have two options: 1. On the front gable just above the window 2. Roof tile vents To most people I suspect the roof tile option would be the obvious choice, but my neighbour uses a log burner and I'm concerned about the MVHR sucking in the nasty smell. I guess my question is, are there any downsides to positioning the intake and exhaust above the bedroom window like I'm proposing? I'm worried that condensation on the outside of the window might be an issue - particularly when someone takes a shower! Pictures attached for reference. If the pipework is outside the thermal envelope I would keep it as short as possible to avoid overheating the air in the summer and insulate like mad. I believe there should be some pictures attached to my post, although I'm new here so please bear with me as I muddle through... I'm aware of the recommendation to have the intake & exhaust at least 1.5m apart and I should easily be able to satisfy that with any of the above options. The soffit option looks interesting and might work depending on how close the wooden beams in my loft are to the soffit. Did you use 125mm vents in the soffit? Going to proceed with putting the intake/exhaust in the gable unless there is a good reason not to - it also means a nice short run to the mvhr.
