I am looking forward to reading and talking to you all about different selfbuild options, as we plan our first steps of building a first home to live in.

We are almost at the point where we have a small yet hopefully sufficient deposit, and we are starting to plan finance and build options - probably using the help to build scheme. We will be looking at plots in the midlands area of Rugby-Lutterworth-Daventry if possible. We will have a relatively small budget, but we dont need anything large and are aiming for a very basic 1 bed, 1.5 storey build.

We have chose to build as we want to make a property that is uniquely ours, and as we live with my parents and dont have any furniture we think it might be a now-or-never type deal.

Also I'm a big petrolhead and would love to incorporate that into the build, such as an interesting garage/parking aspect, without being tacky. Even if this means just pleasant driveway landscaping, from which my cars can be seen and admired from the house, I'll be happy. My partner is happy as long as we are 30 mins from work and have somewhere to grow vegetables - so the majority of our "needs" list is not even about the building, which is why we are okay with a smaller house than most.

If anyone has any advice regarding past budget builds or reducing costs, we'd love to hear it.
