Why are people leaving construction?
IanBECC14 posted a topic in General Self Build & DIY Discussion
I have been tasked with understanding the construction sector in my county, and noticed a large decline in numbers joining the construction industry. And whilst numbers of women joining the industry are on the rise (from 12.6% to 15.8%), there were 200,000 less men in construction in the 3rd quarter of 2023, than there was in the first 3 months prior to covid. I've found some interesting stats from CITB, and have done additional research elsewhere, but I am very interested in getting feedback from those of you who work in the industry, or who may have left/considered leaving the industry. Please feel free to be as honest as you can, and even give suggestions on how we may seek to improve numbers back in construction as a council.- 7 replies

I have a main contractor who I'm planning to use to manage my build. He's suggested to me that is easier for him if I pay the guys that will work on the job directly rather than paying him and him passing it on. The reason given is that it takes him over the VAT threshold. Can anyone comment on this kind of set up? I don't think there's any specific reason why this might be a problem. He would manage the guys on site on a day to day basis, though clearly I would be responsible for ensuring that they were paid correctly and the appropriate tax paid etc. And if I get it wrong, I'm on the hook. Can anyone suggest whether this is ok and where I can get more information about my liabilities and responsibilities?
