Hi everyone!
Please refer to the sectional view below of our new bungalow, facing the garden.
The brown wall is load-bearing, while the pink wall is not. To create more space in the loft, we're considering removing the trusses. I understand the following changes are required:
Orange: New ashlar walls to support the roof.
Dark Blue: Ridge beam and new steel beams and ashlar walls above existing ceiling joists.
Ridge Support: We'll need to support the ridge beam every 5m
Does this sound correct?
Queries:
1. Is it possible to shift the right-hand steel beam (dark blue) slightly to the left so that it sits above the pink wall? I recall reading that these steel beams should ideally be positioned in the lower third of the roof pitch, I don't know if that's a hard and fast rule?
2. Is it feasible to install skylights along the hallway (between pink and brown walls), within the roof span indicated in light blue and remove a section from the ceiling joists along the red line to create an atrium, allowing light from the skylights to flood the hallway below?
Many thanks in advance!
