  1. Thanks all - very helpful!
  2. Hi, I’m installing wet UFH over a new block & beam concrete floor. I need some advice on: The best material to act as a membrane over the block & beam before I lay the insulation layer? The best membrane to lay over the UFH once clipped to the insulation before we pour the liquid screed. Best product to go over the screed (once laitance has been taken care of, before laying engineered wood floor. I’d really appreciate some advice and recommendations please? Thanks v m, W
  3. Hi, Id like some advice on pipe lagging for the rad circuit with a heat pump. Just had all new pipe work including a 28mm rad circuit. House is very well insulated. My question is what is the best / most sensible lagging approach for the rad circuit to minimise heat loss and protect against issues? I was thinking of using 13mm self sealing lagging and then wrapping with rock wool? Grateful for any ideas / thoughts please? Thanks!
  4. BotusBuild! Thanks for the recommendation. I've been in contact with them and they have been great so far - very helpful and the quote is good too! I was impressed with the information which they send over with the quote too - really informative and gives me faith. Thanks for the recommendation.
  5. What I was getting at is whether a liquid screed will warm more quickly, hold heat better etc?
  6. HI all, I have a reasonably large area to screed over UFH. The pricing for liquid screed seems to be pretty good - only a few hundred more than concrete. I like this as an idea, especially if I don't have to do it, it's more thermally efficient for UFH and it dries and is walkable faster than concrete. It all seems great - but is there anything that I need to be aware of before I commit? Does anyone have any recommendations for a supplier in the South West - I'm in Porlock, Somerset. Thanks for your help, Sean
  7. Hi, Any advice on the best products to provide UV protection for thermo wood cladding? I’m looking for a brushable clear UV coating that will help to slow the weathering / greying of my cladding. Has anyone got any personal use recommendations? t Thanks v m, W
  8. Hi, I’m in the latter stage of finishing a new roof. I could use some advice on insulation and cavity size. I am able to get 150mm of insulation between the rafters and then plaster board, leaving a 25mm air cavity. My questions are: Will this be ok from a building regs point of view? Will it be sufficiently thermally effective? Any thoughts please? Thanks v m,
  9. Hi, I'm doing a major refurb and switching to an ASHP. I've insulated the walls to within an inch of their lives but now just getting the new roof felt & battened. I need to insulate the crawl spaces in the loft area and now is the time where I have the best access. I have removed all the old fibreglass insulation and want to replace with something that is thermally efficient and won't cause me to itch as much as the fibre glass. What would people recommend that is efficient and easy to install. What depth of insulation should I be aiming for in the loft spaces? Any help much appreciated. Thanks, W
  10. Hi, Thanks for the suggestion but as the areas are a series of small-ish spaces I might not get the heat output that will be needed? Appreciate that I don't need the utility room etc to be roasting but think a series of short runs might not be terribly effective? Thx W
  11. Hi all, I am doing a major refurb and had planned to use wet underfloor heating to the new build kitchen / sitting / dining area. I've factored in floor height to accommodate this. On reflection, I think it would be great to extend the underfloor to the adjacent utility, bathroom and hall areas. The problem is that this area is existing and is a timber board floor. I'm reluctant to have to make major alterations to the floor height in this area - but it would be great to avoid using radiators. I understand there are mesh type / thin profile electric underfloor systems - which would minimise the extra work and hassle. My questions are: Is electric underfloor reasonably economical to run (we'll have solar and battery etc) These areas will need background warmth only. Are the mesh / thin profile systems an option for this type of application? Is the existing floor board floor a problem - what would I need to do to this to make the approach effective? I'd really appreciate some help with this - really outside my comfort zone. Thanks, Sean
  12. Hi, Does anyone have any experience of True Glide based in Sheffield. I've been impressed with the quote and service so far - but would like to know if anyone has used them and would recommend them please? Thanks W

    Cladding

Hi all, Does anyone have any experience of QTD timber in Reading? I've got some sample of their heat treated cladding which I like, but I'd like to know if anyone has any experience / knowledge of the company and theirproducts please? Thanks for your help, W
  14. Hi, Does anyone have any direct experience of Cortizo windows and doors? I have a good quote for supply but would be more comfortable if I had some feedback from you wise people? Thanks, W
  15. Hi, I'm planning and refurb and was thinking about building an external 'services' cupboard to house electricity meter, solar controls and battery. The plan is to build a timber double skinned fully insulated (50mm PIR board) cupboard which will then be clad in timber. If I have the battery sitting in there - am I likely to run into any little nasties that will come to bite me? Thanks for your help, W
  16. Hi, I'd like to get some recommendations for a good supplier installer in the South West (I'm in West Somerset). Ideally a supplier that can design, supply and install solar and and ASHP. I'd be grateful for any recommendation please? Thanks W
  17. Hi, Quite a few places advertise it but when you get as far as placing an order they can't fulfill. I have got a couple of places that do seem to be able to supply - but I suppose I won't really know until order is placed. I'm looking at the beads option too.
  18. Hi, I have 120mm Kingspan K108 specified as the cavity insulation for a new extension as part of a renovation. I'm keen to insulate really well but understand that the 120mm Kingspan is now subject to a minimum order of 1000m2 - which is bonkers! I'd like to maintain the designed thermal properties - so my question is: Can I double up and use Kingspan 60mm boards? I'm guessing that this will give a very similar level of insulation but wonder if having two boards will create other issues such as creating a draft chimney within the void or similar? Would it be any more of a pain to install than single board etc? Are there alternatives that will have the same thermal properties of the Kingspan? Would really appreciate some help with this! Thanks in advance! W
  19. Hi, Does anyone have any experience of Ideal brand heat pumps? A supplier has proposed this brand but it's not one that I have come across (but then I'm new to this!). Really grateful to learn if this is a reputable, reliable brand that is efficient etc? Any input very gratefully received. Thanks, W
  20. Hi, Would appreciate any thoughts on ASHP's and noise? The ideal location would be at the side of the house but this borders our neighbours. Do I need to be concerned about noise potentially being an issue for us and our neighbours. Luckily, the neighbours are great and so keen not to hack them off more than we have to. Any advice gratefully received! Thx
  21. Hi all, I'd appreciate some advice on whether there is any value in having a battery as a part of my solar set-up? We have a relatively small roof footprint and so we can only generate approx 3.6KW from solar. I had originally intended to have a battery but have been advised that it is unlikely to be very effective given the 3.6KW constraint. I don't want to go to the expense and hassle of installing a battery if I could use that investment better elsewhere. Can anyone help me with this please? Thanks in advance, W
  22. OK - that's helpful. Thx - I appreciate it
  23. Marshian - Thanks for the comment. When you say 'in conflict' - is this likely to be a real problem or more that it isn't optimal? This side of things in not my strength!
  24. Thanks for all the helpful comments. The current boiler is a Worcester GR8701iW - 34KW Class A As we'll be taking the roof off, I plan to fully insulate the roof space and then add Knauf external wall insulation and then clad in timber. We'll also replace all windows and doors with Alu 1.1 system. The extension floor and walls will be insulated as will be new build. So, I think that we'll have insulation covered and be pretty thermally efficient. I like the idea of keeping the boiler but adding pipework and cabling to accommodate a heat pump in the future. Does this seem like a sensible option? Thx W
