Mini split instead of a heat pump?
anonymous replied to anonymous's topic in Air Source Heat Pumps (ASHP)
Ah. I'm a network engineer in my day job . I like the simplicity of WiFi even with the potential security concerns. Ultimately you decide if the benefit is worth the security risk. That also makes sense. My house is semi detached so routing shouldn't be an issue. The previous owner did have AC going into the attic but nowhere else do I know where one AC unit already is They basically left the non functioning AC on the side of the building. The AC they put on stopped working years ago. There's no "cassette" either -
Mini split instead of a heat pump?
anonymous replied to anonymous's topic in Air Source Heat Pumps (ASHP)
Thanks. I've been watching the Tim and Kat video where he said he went for something with WiFi, largely because it's much easier for a whole house system. Remote controls aren't amazing for that That to me makes sense. I've got a fair chunk of space on the side of my house too. By "then extend", do you mean to essentially get say one room, and then extend it to the house as a whole? I do also have lodgers who insist on having the heated towel radiator on, which is annoying but they're paying me for it, so I think I'd need that in at least one bathroom to be on most of the day -
Mini split instead of a heat pump?
anonymous replied to anonymous's topic in Air Source Heat Pumps (ASHP)
Thanks. I didn't realise you could have it in bathrooms, if you had it ducted I was thinking perhaps I could : Get A2A Use it for a bit Remove almost all my radiators except the two for the bathrooms Then get a much smaller air to water ASHP to heat up a water cylinder, and those two radiators. I'd have to upgrade the piping and radiators for the bathrooms but they'd be the only two things I'd need to realistically consider. Either that, or: Get ducted A2A and have it in the bathroom as well Remove all radiators Still get a small ASHP just for water Would that perhaps be a good enough plan? -
Mini split instead of a heat pump?

I think I've watched all of Dameon's videos, and the main one I watched from Tim and Kat is where they talk about A2A and why they got it -

A small ASHP for water, essentially? -
Mini split instead of a heat pump?
anonymous replied to anonymous's topic in Air Source Heat Pumps (ASHP)
4 bedrooms One big open plan living room. It used to be both a living and front room I think Then there's a utility room and the kitchen too. Obviously there are bathrooms which have their own towel radiators as well. One of the bathrooms has a heated towel radiator. One is just an en suite that has no such thing It's basically a 4 bedroom semi detached house with a dormer on top -
Mini split instead of a heat pump?
anonymous replied to anonymous's topic in Air Source Heat Pumps (ASHP)
Apologies. Yes, a multi split for all the different rooms in my house. Even heat geek have a thing where their fourth tip is to simply repipe the system. This is especially an issue when it comes to say, powerflushing https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dEDitJnRgz4&t=4s -
Mini split instead of a heat pump?
anonymous replied to anonymous's topic in Air Source Heat Pumps (ASHP)
Yes I'd rather do away with fossil fuels tbh. Regarding the above, whilst microbore could still be good for a heat pump, it's not exactly advised Are you also referring to say the Vaillant arastor? When you talk of a cylinder with a dedicated heat pump? -
I've got microbore piping and ageing radiators. Would a mini split work out just as efficient as a heat pump? I imagine you don't necessarily need radiators and therefore the associated piping for said radiators, for a mini split? You'd still need to heat hot water though which could become an issue
-
Not at all. Fairly low ceilings too. Not as low as new houses ofc but not exactly as high as a 1930s house. I can touch the ceiling on my tip toes, and I'm like 5 ft 7, so 42mm did seem a bit excessive to me
-
Thanks. I did think 42mm seems a bit unnecessary I won't however be getting a heat pump itself, until after I've done a load of other efficiency upgrades I do still have gas, but I intend on making sure it's effectively heat pump ready, but in a more "modular" way The other efficiency upgrades have an ROI. This doesn't have a monetary ROI, but long term it is better for the environment. I kinda need that saved up cash from returns from other stuff first though!
-
So I'm in a position where I have to replace my copper piping regardless because they're microbore Should I then just go straight to 42mm pipework? I ask after seeing this Surely I could get away with maybe a bit less if I insulate the house well first? Or is the 42mm piping effectively a fail safe? Ie: insulation does eventually need replacing

Low energy retrofit - Architect cost

Chris (director I believe?) I think an office administrator drafted the quote -
That's a fair shout. I'll steer away from it then

Thanks. I've seen people with inability to mortgage but that was before the current advice. The company that I was looking at was Home Logic who apparently have all the relevant certifications, and therefore have the relevant ability to know how to design it too But honestly, it doesn't matter if it's the best material ever with regards to insulation, if it's still an issue with regards to mortgage vendors, then I'd not necessarily want it
-
Thanks. Given that's the case, perhaps best to leave out? Purely based on the potential inability to mortgage? And even if you can mortgage, you're shutting yourself off from most vendors?

It was me who mentioned a PassivHaus ethos tbf. I said that PassivHaus has diminishing returns I contacted them after seeing this http://www.guytaylorassociates.co.uk/projects/passivhaus-manchester.html Also tbf I didn't speak to an actual architect. -
So I've seen this https://www.rics.org/content/dam/ricsglobal/documents/press-releases/Spray foam insulation consumer guide_March2023.pdf And from what I see, it seems we're back at square one? One of the dos is to contact your mortgage vendor Realistically people had to do that before the current advice too. To me, that means potentially cutting yourself off from most of the market And it doesn't necessarily mean that mortgage provider accepts it in the future too Have people had it done? Was it easy to mortgage? Were the rates the same? If you've sold it, was it easy to sell?

They've done PassivHaus stuff before which is why I went to them in the first place -

Ah so it is fair -

Thanks If I get that detail, would the quote be fair? -
Please see attached. So this includes one structural survey, to find out what the walls are made of properly (ie : to find out what's best for the property) I've said I'm using the PassivHaus ethos but not necessarily going full PassivHaus given diminishing returns Is that quote fair? It seems quite a lot but I don't know if that's normal for PassivHaus

Heat and hot water cylinder vs Vaillant Arastor
anonymous replied to anonymous's topic in Energy Storage
Really? I thought you still need a kind of cylinder for an A2AHP? They've said "The Arostor can be vented into the room but, preferably it would go to outside. Our concern with room venting would be efficiency and also potential issues around the MVHR system. This would of course be explored in detail to see the overall benefits between options." -
Heat and hot water cylinder vs Vaillant Arastor
anonymous replied to anonymous's topic in Energy Storage
Is that heat battery vendor one that has both a lots of amps, and uses the sun? I guess the unvented cylinder can be used in conjunction with an Arastor? Also fwiw the architect I'm talking to has suggested that the Arastor should go outside I guess that unvented cylinder also works with Eddi where they divert power from solar to it instead of going to the grid?
