  1. Mr Punter No as an art studio top floor work shop ground floor.
  2. hello Steamy tea, yes NE Italy so fairly moderate climate 10 months of the year (rainy May, snow Jan, its on a mountain). There shouldn't be too much water vapour inside, its just me and my paintbrush, it will be my studio. Mainly thinking of the cold few weeks in winter. The roof will be torched with lime but there will still be some ventilation through them too. I have seen a guy who used twin wall polycarbonate sheets. These are light weight and would trap air from a cold wind but could provide some ventilation in places.
  3. I am about to insulate my barn but I am a bit unsure of the order of materials. As you can see in the photo the walls are semi open slatted, would it be better to put a thin ply barrier before a water proof membrane, then insulation. We have a lot of creatures lizards, snakes, insects, etc who would love to make their nome in-between.
  4. Thanks for the reply Nod, I appreciate the info, I am in Italy I found a local company that uses hemp instead of horse hair they sell it by the sack its not too pricey. Also appreciate the safety advice
  5. Yes Liguria - Italy
  6. The previous owners and I guess many generations had horses / donkeys in the lower and hay / storage in the upper part.
  7. Does anyone have any experience with lime torching ? In my barn I have an exposed tile roof (see picture), I don't want to put on a new roof. This will be a work space not a living area so it does not need to be cosy just comfortable. I have read a bit about lime /plaster/horsehair mixture that is applied to the underneath of the tiles. It acts as a buffer agains wind blown rain, a mortar to secure tiles and also as a form of insulation. Any links or tips would be greatly appreciated.
  8. Hello my name is Lee. I am renovating a barn to use as a work studio. I consider myself pretty handy but have never taken on anything as big as this before. The actual structure seems pretty sturdy and functions well as a barn we only really get a few weeks a year below zero. I know many people will think it wold be easier to re-roof but I quite like the look of the raw tiles. I will start with the top floor. my list of jobs are as follows. 1. Replace missing tiles on the roof. 2. Fix or replace any damaged floorboards. 3. Insulate the walls from the inside. 4. insulate the floor and lay a polyvinyl flooring. 5. Insulate the roof tiles from the inside (horse hair / Lyme torching). 6. Simple electrics led lights and a couple of plug sockets. 7. Simple solar installation either on the roof or static somewhere in the surrounding garden. 8. Perhaps replace one wall with clear corrugated fibreglass. Then start on the lower part of the barn. I will comb through the forums for relevant info. Any tips or links would be greatly appreciated. This will not be a living space but I would like it to be a comfortable and safe work area.
