  1. Hi everyone, I recently posted a topic regarding a survey I am currently undertaking for my Planning Masters degree regarding the benefits, challenges and facilitators of self build and custom build housing. The survey ends tomorrow, so please could I urge anyone who hasn't completed it to do so now. Your insights have already proved invaluable to my work, however more would be greatly appreciated! The link for the survey is below: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSezNby01KGReNIszG6zYr3kM8kDJgW9sRP4shYUw5uyYUTphw/viewform?usp=sf_link Many many thanks in advance and I hope you all have a wonderful Easter break.
  2. @Dreadnaught. Yes please! A major part of the survey is to find out peoples' attitudes and opinions of what benefits self-build and custom-build housing can bring to the individual and to the country.
  3. Hi everyone, Just a friendly (and hopeful) request and reminder to those who may not have already completed my survey; I am still looking to hear from those who built or are looking to build there home or homes. I would be most grateful if you could spend a spare 5mins filling it out. It is closing on the 31st of March!! I am a planner (sorry) and student at Birmingham University and my survey is looking to your views on what the benefits, facilitators and challenges of self-build and custom-build housing are. The link is below: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSezNby01KGReNIszG6zYr3kM8kDJgW9sRP4shYUw5uyYUTphw/viewform?usp=sf_link Many thanks in advance!
  4. Lovely thanks @Visti, much appreciated. I may well do, thank-you.
  5. Hi everyone, I recently posted a topic regarding a survey I am currently undertaking for my Planning Masters degree, and I've been bowled over by the responses I have got so far on this forum. This is a polite request asking to see whether anymore members would be willing to fill out my short survey. I'm specifically looking for more insights from people who have gone down the custom build or group build route. The link for the survey is below: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSezNby01KGReNIszG6zYr3kM8kDJgW9sRP4shYUw5uyYUTphw/viewform?usp=sf_link I also promised I would share the results as they came though periodically. As I don't want to bias any further responses, I'd rather not make the results public, but am more that willing to share the results with anyone who is interested by email or PM. I have also surveyed Local Authorities for their views, and will share these results as they come through too. Many thanks and I look forward to seeing your responses.
  6. @Vistigreat news re the affordable housing, I'm glad to see self build hopefully is becoming affordable, and less of a rich mans game. Thank you also for all the info. I'm currently writing my Masters in Planning and am research self-build and custom build for my dissertation, and will definitely be using Graven Hill as a case study, so thank you for your insight.
  7. Out of interest do you know whether there is much provision for affordable (social) housing?
  8. Hi all, I would be interested in your views of large scale custom build sites such as Graven Hill in Bicester. Here's a good piece on the site from the Guardian: https://www.theguardian.com/money/2018/feb/10/custom-self-build-housing-graven-hill I'm assuming (perhaps incorrectly) most of you have built a single property perhaps away from the crowd. How would you feel living on a site, where everyone builds their own home? Would thins detract from your original reasons for building your own home? I personally feel its a significant step forward, in terms of building homes in sufficient numbers that meet our own individual needs and have a unique (debatable possibly) character. Anyway I thought it would be an interesting debate and I look forward to hearing your views.
  9. Good evening everyone, I'm bowled over by the number of response I have received today! It has exceeded my expectations. Obviously would I love to have more so please keep sharing. Thank you for all of your useful feedback and encouragement...I have added the 'm' onto many . Following the advice of @recoveringacademic I have disabled the function that shows the results as it was showing email addresses and phone numbers. I will periodically post updates of the results as I go along, and I will be more than willing to share the end results to anyone who is interested. I am also sending out a questionnaire to Council's across the UK, to get their views and again I will post updates as I go forward. The dissertation is due in in mid-September. I will do my best to be an active member of the forum, and offer what advice I am able to. Please put these requests in a PM. Please also be aware that much depends on the site and the Council's policies, and I may not be in a position to give a full and definitive answer. However it concerns development in Blaby I will have to offer my apologies due to ethical reasons and pass you onto our main number. I must also thank those who have kindly offered to take part in an telephone interview, I will be in touch with you individually, however I do have to just finalise the questions so it may be a while before I am able to conduct them. Thank you all again, and thank you for making me feel welcome here...I know planners are not always afforded such a luxury.
  10. Hi everyone, I'm a Planning Officer in Blaby, and am currently studying my Masters in Planning at Birmingham City University and am researching the self-build housing sector for my dissertation. I am looking for people who would be willing to take part in a short survey about your experiences of self-build housing. I'm looking to gather the insights of people who are currently undertaking, or have in the past undertaken, a self-build project in the UK, in order to gauge what you believe are the benefits, barriers and facilitators, of undertaking self-build project. The survey will only take 10-15 minutes to complete. Please follow the following link to the survey: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSezNby01KGReNIszG6zYr3kM8kDJgW9sRP4shYUw5uyYUTphw/viewform?usp=sf_link The feedback gained from your experiences will give me valuable insights into the self-build market and I tremendously appreciate you taking the time to complete it. Many thank in advance for your help. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me via PM Charles Ebden
