best way to close this hole

This hole was for a extraction hood that has been removed. The cable will also be removed.  I'd like to cover/close the hole. It doesn't have to be pretty because the ceiling will be replaced next year. There is cold space above (barn) so I'll also be laying some insulation above the hole to reduce heat loss. The ceiling is currently wood.

Yeah, that sounds easy. I had it in my mind I had to fill it, but covering it works well.

If you want something slightly tidier

 

Cut a square of timber the width of two planks and larger than the hole is all dimentions out first .

 

Trace around it and cut out an identical hole in the roof. 

 

Then place a backing piece of timber above the hole and screw your "patch" into place. A small bit of filler and wood stain and you're finished. 

 

 

 

 

TBH, if you're pulling if down I'd just go with @TonyT suggestion,
