Filling gap around door frame

Taking original plaster off wall as it had come away has revealed massive gaps between brick and frame because the frame is fitted on wedges into the brick work.

 

Before I just trim some wooden blocks to wedge in the gap and foam the rest of it whats the correct way?

the original way would have been to ram a load of newspaper in it and then plaster over,  

but foam is the modern way, depending how good the fixings are you might want to put some packers between the door and the lining to make sure the foam doesnt close up the gaps

Well the top was boarded because the wooden lintel so it was open but the sides were palstered which has just fallen out as I removed the wall plaster

I'll put some blocks in and bang some concrete screws through to make sure
