Apple Homekit - good basis for DIY home automation?

Recommended Posts

Just been reading about this. Not really interested in the music capabilities as I am still a hifi separates man and, to be frank, not interested in gimmicky functionality, but what would be good would be automated blinds (even better if triggered by a temperature rise within the room);  and lights that can be programmed to come on and off randomly to simulate someone at home.

A couple of years ago I bought one LIFX bulb to experiment with but ended up just using it to amuse my daughter with the changing colours and then the dropped connections got annoying.

I have just read that the relatively new Apple Homepod mini has a new or newish wireless technology called Thread which (appears) to offer instant action/solid connections when eg you use an App to switch something on or off that has the same wireless technology. The other plus point apparently is that all the devices mesh together so you end up being able to extend wireless connectivity easily without relying on wifi or extenders or hubs etc.

Again I may be wrong here but it appears this https://nanoleaf.me/en-GB/products/nanoleaf-essentials/ is the only bulb atm that comes with this Thread wireless.

Indeed a quick look on the Thread website shows a certified product list but there are not many devices listed (no blinds for example). https://www.threadgroup.org/What-is-Thread/Thread-Benefits#certifiedproducts

Is this because this is so new or maybe because there are alternatives out there that are better?

Be interesting to hear from anyone who knows this area who can comment - particularly anyone with experience of the Nanoleaf bulb?

thanks

Thread is one of the technologies (along with Wifi, and Bluetooth but only for initial connection) that will be  used in the forthcoming Matter standard that is being sponsored by all the large manufacturers, including Apple, and which officially launches next year.

I shall be centering my home automtation system on Matter (and thus Thread too).

(The alliance behind thread grew from the Zigbee alliance, which renamed itself the connectivity standards alliance).

For blinds, Somfy of France is a board member of the Matter (and Thread, where their CTO is a Director of the organisation) and they manufacture devices for both curtains and blinds. None using Matter have been launched yet but it would be reasonable to expect them next year. Their products seem to be modular and all it will take is a Matter-compatible module to be launched.

I will be using them for automating my curtains throughout my new house.

Trouble with a lot of this technology, is moves on too fast.  Almost as soon as it's installed it's obsolete or been superseded by something with better functionality or faster.

Was going down this route, but the system I was intending to install, became obsolete from investigation a couple of years ago, to point of purchase.  So left everything manual instead.

Just been reading about the Apple Home App - people saying its terrible even after 5 yrs of evolution.

I use the Home App and I find it to be fine. I think that all of the home-automation apps are criticised and the adage that "you-can't-please-all-of-the-people…" applies.

The Home app's functionality will be extended in time but it can already do everything that you mentioned in your original post, especially if you are comfortable using the Apple Shortcuts app as welll for some more advanced automations.

Keep in mind that: (i) the best home automation shouldn't need human intervention but be programmatic; e.g. blinds that rise at sunrise, or rise when the brightness of sunshine exceeds X; or using motion sensors in rooms; and (ii) in addition to using the Home app, you can control your home using Siri from a Homepod, iPhone, iPad, Mac or Apple Watch, or button, or from Control Centre on any of those devices (and all work well in my experience). (And Siri is now much better than it used to be.).

Not sure I totally agree with this.  We were promised home automation when I was a child, I don't think technology has moved fast enough IMHO.

I have a mix of lighting and appliances that I can control and automate from phones or voice (both Siri and Google) - it just works and I'm very happy with it.  e.g I arrive home at night and the hall light is on.

I had one of the first Nanoleaf bulbs in the UK.  I have had one firmware update and it has been faultless.  The colours are excellent.

That might have been right up until now but all I am reading about Thread indicates it is superior to both z wave and zigbee - here for example - https://techtechandmoretech.com/news/thread-smart-home/

Sure . I picked on technology that exists today I.e lots of z wave / zigbee sensors etc . Thread is still new

Say it is a 5 W LED.

If you just turned it on and left it, would cost about £10/year.

I just remember where the switch is, seems easy to turn a light on, or off, at the wall.

If you have two arms full of shopping, etc it's nice that it does it automatically.  What a waste of £10 lol

I set up a 0.5 watt led night light that is on when the bright main lights in the windowless en-suite are off, as a movement sensor used a lot more power, and she didn't want to click a switch at night (also the light is a nice dim yellowy orange so it disturbs the sleeping patterns less).

Thanks - I think you had mentioned this in another post that I read - I had hoped that "Thread" was this standard but from what you say it will be a subset of "Matter"? Do you know enough about this to advise whether (assuming I purchased a Homepod and Nanoleaf light to work via thread it would integrate into any future Matter infrastructure?

Yes, it will. Nanoleaf has announced full support for Matter.

I think the point Dreadnaught is making is that this is the big boys' collaboration to fix the very issue you are mentioning ie to produce a unified system to bring order to the current mess. As it seems Apple Google and Amazon are on board with this I suspect it is worth paying attention to.

While it is encouraging to see all the big consumer companies supporting Matter and Thread, such as Apple, Google, Amazon, Samsung and IKEA. What is arguably more important is the support by the semiconductor manufacturers. All the little companies buy their semiconductor modules off-the-shelf for their systems. When those off-the-shelf modules move over then the whole industry will follow.

Semiconductor manufacturers such as Silicon Labs, Texas Instruments, NXP, Nordic Semiconductor, Qualcomm are all backing Thread.

Another perspective is the wider market of commercial building automation. None of the consumer systems currently available are suitable for large buildings. A major focus of Matter (and therefore Thread) is for it to be a system suitable for building automation and control.

Companies that specialise in building automation and control such as Siemens, Schneider Electric, Assa Abloy, Lagrand, even Lutron, are all taking central roles with Thread.
