Columns

Hi all

see photo of roof going on in my house. U will see I have an overhang on my roof. On my drawings it shows a column at the outside to support the rafters and roof.
It’s not structural , just there to prevent sag on the rafters. Column would need to be about 3.7m long. Have you any suggestions on what I would do?.. A galvanised steel Column classed or perhaps a steel circular column?

thanks

You could have galv steel but it needs to be connected at the base and at the top it will need to pick up all the rafter feet that need support, so you will need something fabricated.  Tube section / CHS looks good.  Is it going where it won't be accidentally walked into?

Why not just add in a 4x2 glued and screwed to the rafter tails and 600mm up from the wall plate ..? Would stiffen the rafter ends, then glue and screw a ply/OSB sheet under the tails which would essentially make it a single cassette that doesn’t need any post.

Only other thought is use it for the downpipe ..?
