Bricklaying Prices

Recommended Posts

Just thought I’d post this to perhaps help those working out there budget

I bumped into a friend who runs a bricklaying business Most of the sites in my area (NW) seem to use these middle men for labour

Here’s what he’s paying for site work

Stacker and tubed mortar and bricks dropped to work area

£600 Per thousand face work Extra for detail

£18 m2 block work

Down in the south west, brickie I have been recommended and did a house near me has quoted £19 m2 for easy solid block walls (retaining walls) and £21 m2 for external walls including openings / lintels.

This is on a closed area basis, and mortar mixed on site.

Seems reasonable to me

I wouldn’t like to guess

Perhaps double

I have been quoted £50/m2 for labour and materials for internal block walls, in the SE. spoke to another bricklayer and he said that seemed reasonable.

hope that gives an indication as to how expensive it is down here. feel sorry for my kids as they won't be able to afford to buy their own houses so luckily there'll be enough room for them to stay with us for as long as they need!

As I say Probably double

Self builders will always have to pay more than site rates

Whilst labour rates may seem quite high

They are simply catching up other industries

Our sons partner has set up for herself as a nail technician First year of trading as a sole trader Her profit was 88k

But for the COVID she was set to pass that in her second year

There are plenty of jobs that pay well

But most involve you being self employed

no safety net like an employed person

Kick them out as soon as you can, you will do them no favours keeping them at home.

She must be working her arse off and/or have very good paying clients.

She’s a real good girl

She trained for 4 years earning about 250 per week working for someone

It’s amazing how much women spend on nails She’s booked up for months ahead Even before Covid

While building has been ok for me

I would do Something different given my time again

Bat, trees, archaeology..

Thad the one

At our previous build

He arrived in his car with his own personal reg Yep you’ve guessed it

Talked about bats for an hour Had a couple of glasses of wine

Walked around the plot and said “Yep no bats here “

our contaminated land was even better

Masses of detail 3D computer generated model

No site visit

Warranty

Didnt get out of the car to inspect the foundations

To muddy

inspected the roof from the ground

Did say I’d done a grand job

Final inspection

10 minutes

Didn't look round the house

I can only dream ?

Honestly it's true, to rub salt into the wounds the guy turns up in a brand new top of the range G Wagon over £150ks worth of car.

FML. Talk about kicking a guy in the plums when he's down.

I did a nail technicians course for a laugh about 22 years ago (long story why I did it).

Was pretty easy.

My old man's on the trowel up your way @nod ain't many weeks he grosses less than 1200 rain or shine. All ready mix and forklift with good health a safety can see why brickies don't want small self build jobs. Not sure about other subbies but he's copped close to 20k in grants this year too I'm guessing he shouldn't really be claiming but you won't convince him of that. Brickies are about the most money orientated trade out there. I think it comes from counting every brick they lay and getting paid accordingly.

Yep

A real problem for self builders

Companies have the continuity and look after there lads and as already cover down time

The problem with Brickies that are doing private work is They will want to earn the same or more per day as your dad and be used to doing half as much per day

These are the ones that are available to self builders

Same with my business plastering and render

Whilst our earnings of around 450 per day might sound high Two guys will skim a five bed house out in three days

Wish I’d got in to a trade.

It’s the opportunity to earn that appeals to me as well as reaping what you sow a lot easier than earning your employer a better living.

Never too late I suppose, just a lot harder to be able to afford to live on a starting salary whilst learning when you have more outgoings than a youngster.

It comes because they hate doing the job mate - worst trade to do all day long.
