Magnetic Latches

Recommended Posts

I've been overruled on the door knobs in favour of handles because we can't have magnetic latches with knobs.

This is the handle we like https://www.carlislebrass.com/mono-lever-on-square-rose

With a door a similar style to this https://www.carlislebrass.com/mono-lever-on-square-rose (I'm not a huge fan of the door but finding one that does a full and part glazed option in the range or similar is difficult and the other half is against with anything with horizontal lines or panels because of dust!)

Is there a particular type of magnetic latch I should be looking for and if doors need to be a certain thickness?

There's square ones and round ones. I prefer the round ones.

I have these as does @AliG who put me onto them:

He also has concealed hinges. Something else for you to want after! ?

A mate has just fitted these throughout, I don't like them. Are cheap and look cheap:

Oh crikey, budget doesn't stretch to these.....

Are you sure...you'll dream about them now...never be able to look at those horrible "ordinary" hinges again...

Well I'll tell the other half its one or the other. Magnetic latches or concealed hinges. Come to think of it - there you go if that was a choice which would win?

You can't catch your hip on a concealed hinge as you brush past it naked!

I'd go for latches.

Perhaps I misunderstand. Why not? (If its because you other half says so then I totally agree).

You can get knobs you can turn? Found at random:

Got a pic of the style of knob you're after? People on here are good at hunting down what you want.

I believe it was because the only door knobs we liked were an unsprung Carlisle Brass one one which needed heavy duty latches so magnetic latches would be unsuitable. We also were only looking at around a £12 budget per handle/knob set which hindered choices. The ones in my first thread post (Carlisle Brass Cebu Mono in satin) are £13.95 at the cheapest we can find but we like the design.

Just wondering re magnetic latches if anyone has any issue with either doors staying shut, e.g. strength of the magnetic latches?

I only have them on large cupboard doors but have had no issues with them.

Yes if they are for nornal internal doors they will need a different solution. Mine are just used on cupboards so don’t need to be hidden. There is no reason why the ones you’ve linked to wouldn’t work if they are lined up properly but my dogs would be able to push them open so I couldn’t use them on internal doors. Depends whether you have any pets you want to stay in a specific room I guess.

Why is that?

I don't speak from experience, but I can't see how a magnetic latch is different to a normal latch?  It surely uses the same square shaft and you turn the square shaft to open it, and the latch is not going to know or care if you are turning the square shaft with a handle or a knob. so who says you cannot use a knob with a magnetic catch and WHY?

I think it was because the knob was unsprung. I definitely didn't make it up!

Well either way we had one magnetic latch fitted and my other half hates them. She doesn't think they are as secure as a normal latch, could 'blow open' and wants normal ones.... Means I could have had door knobs after all that. Oh well ?

I've been told I must use the c word more often - compromise.
