Deck Repair

Got to repair this deck. Decent materials used originally, just a pity they never wrapped a bit of dpc around the outside!

I've cut back to the midpoint of the first bearer. (Killed my genuine Skilsaw blade in the process hitting a screw I missed taking out). Found the void filled with the obligatory "we can hide it under the decking" crap. Presumably bits of an old crazy paving patio:

One end of the bearer is shot:

I'm going to chop that back with the multitool and 5 star wood treat everything. All cleared out:

Plan is to make up a "ladder" o/off the same 145x45 bearer. I'll sister a section on to support the rotted bit I chop out. Then treat all that & wrap 3 sides in dpc. That'll get screwed the existing bearer. I've boxes and boxes of 5x90 st/st screws bought on special from Screwfix. I'll go mad with them. Then 3 new deck boards running perpendicular to the existing. The dpc will be high enough to protect that edge. Looks like they originally had some 3x3" support posts straight in the ground. Long since rotted, I'll support the repair section on the slabs I took out.

Then a decking cleaner, jet wash and some of that Cuprinol non slip deck stain.

I like a simpler life.  I would just edge the last bearer with a sacrificial strip of wood spaced off slightly, and extend the lawn and accept the deck is now slightly smaller.

I did consider this. Filling with soil, it needs a couple of m3. Getting it there/delivered a bit of a pig due to access etc (and my back ?). Did think of filling the void with beach pebbles. I could take soil over from home but only got the car.

The ladder idea I can make up at home and take over on the roof rack.

I got some decking today.

One of my scouts told me some had arrived at the sawmill.  I went straight there, bought the boards I needed, leaving just 6 left in the rather bare timber shed.

You have to be quick. I understand a pallet load came in yesterday, and I expect the last scraps will be gone by now.

I only want 3 x 3.6m. I'm added to the list and they've taken my number.

Made up a frame out of 145x45. (The ladder frame came out a little twisted as the radial arm saw I went and borrowed to cut housings, well the timber bed it sits on is all warped, means the housing depth is different front to back. I really must fix my own saw for the sake of a capacitor!).

Cut out the immediate rot and a bit beyond then smothered  everything in Rustins Advanced Wood Preserver. I'll slip in a length of dpc along the front edge and sit the repair section on some of the removed broken paving slabs.

I used the Ronseal deck reviver/cleaner. Going to finish in grey, non slip Cuprinol deck stain.

Edit: I still need to get 3 lengths of  decking!
