Which paint to use

I need to repaint the reception area white in the business end of my house. It’s an area that inevitably gets some wear on the walls.
which Wall paint is best for strength (ie resisting knocks/ scratches when brushed against) and can also be wiped clean?

When my decorator came to paint my build he insisted on that Dulux paint for the ceilings. (Only bit that was white).

I was recommended it on here. It is very, very good. Possibly the best paint I've ever used tbh. It's got a very subtle sparkle to it to my eyes.

For the pre coats inc a watered down 1st coat I used Leyland Super Leytex that's high opacity and good on new plaster. Tbh that looked bloody good on it's own.

Any imperfections I filled with Easy Fill 20 before AND after the Super Leytex.

(No I don't work for Deluxe or Leyland or British Gypsum!).

I've used Dulux Easycare.

One thing to watch for is that they also have bathroom and kitchen versions, and about 29 (ish) shades of white, but that not all their umpteen shades of white are available in all ranges. So if you plan to match, choose carefully, and do it all at once - next year they may  have a different selection of whites.

Also watch out for discounts - the last lot I had for a whole bungalow was about 30% off overall - Wickes 3 for 2 plus some wheer i needed less or not on discount.. Something like £110 not £160.

But I would never by Dulux for spraying, as it bungs up my machine.

Dulux Trade Diamond Matt

I once had some places sprayed with this and any bits of overspray on wooden floors was almost impossible to remove once dried.  Not soft like normal emulsion.  It is more scrub clean than wipe clean.

All my walls are white and I was going to use Dulux Trade Diamond Matt throughout, but after 4tins of the stuff I wasn't that impressed (not able to remove fly shit from ceiling without removing paint) with either the hefty price or the results. I then tried Leyland Trade Hardwearing paint (1/2 the cost) which I find rolls a bit better and does 'feel' durable. Some of the other paints I have tried come off if I just use a dry cloth to take any marks out!

You end up being very careful how you apply the Dulux stuff as you see and count how quickly the paint disappears from the tin!

Their Easycare seems like a good product too and have used that in bathrooms and kitchen.

At the moment no paint will stand the clumsiness of tradespeople so I know I will have to repair/repaint walls where some idiot decides to scrape by with his claw hammer hanging from his belt!

Because of price? Dulux is expensive.

Price is one factor but I was also told Wickes paint is manufactured by PPG - who make Dulux !

I've used all of their range of specialist emulsion paints (Bathroom, Kitchen, T&W) and never had a problem. I've also got a source for PPG trade stock / rebrands etc and buy at significantly less than RRP.

Isn't Dulux Akzo Nobel now? PPG retained ICI Nexa in the Automotive sector,  but Dulux went away...

Johnstones is the PPG architectural brand.

Leyland and Johnston's but also own the Dulux brand in Canada ..!  Guy I buy from has a big trade supply chain so makes me wonder, and pretty sure he stocks Leyland and Dulux. Got me wanting to check now ..!

Thank you everyone.
Because it is a reception area, things do get knocked (it’s amazing how little care people take when it’s not their own home...). So I am reconciled to the fact that it prob needs redoing  every 4-5yrs. Do I might just save a few quid and go with wickes or Leyland

Yep, Leyland is PPG too.  For reference, I've been associated with the automotive paint trade for almost thirty years now (weighing/mixing IT support) and have also been subbed into retail mixing in Homebase etc.

Somewhere 2007-ish as I recall (you can research the complexities if you're bored) the coatings industry was reshuffled before and after European monopolies issues.

ICI decorative (Dulux) went to Akzo

ICI automotive (Nexa) went to PPG

Crown went from Akzo, through a management buyout, to being owned by Hempel.

And if you think that's complex, look at the history of Axalta...

Whilst Wickes have 2 x 2,5l for £34, which is £7 per litre.

Obvs minus your usual Wickes 10-20% trade and other discount, plus 5% more if they are running a Trade Offer as they did late in March. Makes it about the same price as Armstead ?, or close enough to buy on paint not price.

Dulux own outlets are currently shut.

But who knows what else is out there?

I used to like Wickes' gloss paints.  Know idea who made it for them.

My problem is the 25 mile journey to Wickes.

Wickes actually do free delivery for orders over £75 (except to Timbuktu ), which I think is a lot lower than it used to be.

Unfortunately several buildhubbers live in Timbuktu.
