Counter Top Basins : snog, marry, avoid?

Recommended Posts

Looking at the elegant simplicity of a simple bowl acting as a sink - unencumbered by taps or soap holder - lulled me into a false sense of preparedness to buy.....

Easy to clean, I thought

Easy to install, I thought

Simple design, I thought - I like that.

But then the other bits of my brain woke up.

No overflow

No taps

How is it fixed to the surface?

What happens if a grandchild grabs the sink and pulls?

How d'ya clean round the bottom of the outside of the bowl?

Snog, Marry, Avoid?

Yes I have installed these for customers but would not have one myself, trendy yes, but not fit fir purpose (IMO).

no overflow is mad

taps have to be pillar types from the cabinet below

fixed with silicone/ct1

depends on the weight of the child (OAP!) and the adhesion of the “glue”

nightmare to clean properly.

For once, I can say - yes, I have got that one under control. Do I get £200 and avoid jail?

only if the pipes exit the wall where you want the taps with wall mounted connections? https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Basin-Bath-Taps-Wall-Mounted-Traditional-Cross-Head-Hot-Cold-Chrome-Belgrade/173284076051?hash=item2858892a13:m:mrlg5nlfUvG_t4v9NNsH4eQ

or these that do have overflows.  https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Durovin-Wash-Basin-Bowl-Ceramic-Counter-Top-Oval-With-Overflow-580mm/191744777878?epid=9032571691&hash=item2ca4e11e96:g:KrUAAOSwWGJdrzDB

We have a travertine counter top basin with wall mounted taps. I wouldn't go with travertine again because it stains but everything else about them is great.

You can get them with overflows built in...

https://www.victorianplumbing.co.uk/costa-600-x-370mm-counter-top-basin-0th-ves009?campaign=googlebase&gclsrc=aw.ds&&gclid=CjwKCAiA0svwBRBhEiwAHqKjFs3zrhMpnMhPic36B_xvzLKTVmclDSsqovoLNc6mzWn8M4idAcguTxoC_n8QAvD_BwE

or you can add one hidden in the wall that bypasses the plug when the level gets too high.

https://www.tapsempire.co.uk/product/ideal-standard-idealflow-hidden-basin-overflow-n8326/?gclid=CjwKCAiA0svwBRBhEiwAHqKjFi_5DK62Xm2p-79kvMlxftgAc8GxTC07UWv_k5vHNIVAWpCCs9KhJBoCfZ0QAvD_BwE

Taps can be wall or counter top mounted.  Our wall mounted taps seem to stay cleaner for longer as water from wet hands doesn't run down the tap or puddle around the base of the tap.

Some counter top basins even have mountings for taps.

I fixed our basin down with a bit of silicon same as our shower glass panels. They aren't going anywhere. The basin is also fixed down by the waste but you arent meant to do that (our counter top is also travertine and I forgot to make the hole big enough to clear the nut).

I would avoid a basin with a very rounded bottom as it would be hard to clean under there (other things with rounded bottoms are fine by me :-)
