Rafter Spacing

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

My side extension roof is 2300mm wide, the architect has specified 400mm rafter centres (so 7 rafters)

What do people normally do when its an odd size? would you fit them at 400mm centres and have a smaller centre at the end or would you divide the space up equally so that they are all the same centres (in my case it would be 383mm centres)

Thanks Wozza.

Use 400mm centres with a non standard one at one end. It simplifies boards and other materials.

It probably depends on what's on/between/under them. If you're fitting plasterboard under/insulation between/square-edge boards on top then 400mm with one narrow one at the end would be best to align with the other materials.

If the underside is bare/battened, no insulation between and tongue and groove boards on top you could do whichever you prefer (but I think most would still go for standard centres).
