  1. Hello, I am converting a property into 10 student accommodation flats. A three-phase supply is required and we received an offer for an MSDB board 180KVA. Today I was told by National Grid, that with an MSDB board we will require 10 separate meters in either the rooms or the communal areas. As this will be student accommodation and all bills included, I'd rather have one meter positioned in the existing meter room. National Grid told me that for this, only with a Cut Out will it be possible to have one meter only. Can someone please help me out with this? - What is the difference between a Cut Out and MSDB? - How does the difference between the two impact the number of meters required?
  2. Hi there. We're upgrading our sixties house in Sussex with a GSHP, underfloor heating and a new hobby room (separate building) with a goodly chunk of solar PV to go onto its roof. The hobby room will have a separate ASHP. The insulation in the house has also been improved. We've done most things in the house but the new hobby room is yet to be built (we have planning permission) and we're just at the stage of re-wiring the existing house. Octopus have installed a three phase smart meter, although we only have two phases to the house (and that ain't gonna change). Stumbled across this site and wonderful forum when searching for how the importing and exporting of power is going to work with two phases, potentially phases both generating and using power. Any experience or knowledge in that area gratefully received! Cheers UncleK
  3. Evening, I am looking at potentially installing three phase power as opposed to the norm which tends to be single phase for domestic installations. Having trawled this forum and numerous other areas there doesn't appear to be a great detail of information on the pros and cons of three phase in a domestic setting (other than the usual - if you are using 3 phase machinery, can spread the load, careful with mixing phases in same room etc.). I think there are maybe three or four threads on this forum which touch on the subject. It would be great if those of you whom have three phase could give some sort of insight into their own experience in practical terms of this route. Pros, cons, if you could do the build again would you still install three phase? If not, then why not? A bit of insight from those in the know would be beneficial not just to myself, but likely others in the future whom may be pondering the same thing. TIA Jamie
  4. Hi, I'm thinking forward to what type of Electrical connection to apply for down the road if my self build commences. The Electrical Board in Ireland offer 12kVA for Standard Domestic and 16kVA for larger Domestic houses or ones with Heat Pumps. The reason I'm thinking of a larger supply like Three Phase is primarily for future proofing should I get an Electric Car. I would also get Night Rate Electricity so the price of charging overnight is less. if I could afford it a battery like a Tesla Powerwall 2/3 so I can offset the dearer daytime electricity would be ideal. Anyway, with three phase I could get 20kVA or 29kVA & fast charging for newer cars with their increasingly larger capacity batteries. My work travels all over the place, it's not a fixed point to point. Knowing I can fully charge at home overnight and top up in transit offsets the risk the destination has no charging facility. So, what do people have in their homes currently and is three phase the way to go or overkill? There's not that much extra cost for a new connection I've found but the site is in an existing housing estate so it may not be possible to supply the necessary current without a lot of digging (worst case)....I'd still like to know if it would be worth the trouble. There's no change to standard domestic appliances I'd assume, just a different meter/fuseboard? I would get something like a pod-point S22 capable of using the additional capacity. I'd still like to get some solar PV going but have limited roof / garden space in the design.... Anyway, any thoughts on Three Phase for EV Charging or other benefits of having it welcome.....Thanks!
