  1. I would like to jerry-rig the MVHR unit to have it running over the winter months before I finally install it properly next spring. But how to mount it? I have about 6-weeks of cladding to finish off before I can turn to first fix. And then it will take me quite a while to get around to installing the MVHR unit properly. So realistically that won't be until next spring. I am very slow. I often camp on site as I work, treating my build as a (very well insulated) tent. The timber frame is insulated, weathertight, with windows and a temporary front door. Its also airtight (blower-door test of 0.47 ACH (n50) recently). The MVHR unit (Brink Flair 325) is sitting in its box waiting for me. And most of the ducting is already installed (with their valves). Hence, I'd like to temporarily set-up the unit and have it running over the winter months. - How to mount it? - The MVHR unit itself weighs 37 kg. - The walls are 240mm I-beam cassettes, filled with Warmcel and I know where the I-beams are located. - The external wall are currently bare 12.5 mm Smartly but will eventually be covered in 50mm insulated plasterboard. - I could power it from a 240V extension lead. - I could run the condensate drain to local external drain. Any pointers on how to do this would be gratefully received?
  2. Hey everyone, So we are having a nightmare with Building Control in Glasgow City. Since our house is the first self build (ever) in the city, and we are part of the pilot self build scheme, they have no clue about what we're doing here and don't seem at all interested. I have been asking for temporary habitation since July and was told by our BC officer that we might as well just go for full completion. I have been asking for a site visit for months too, when 2 guys in hi-vis jackets and lanyards showed up unannounced the other day, not wearing masks, and started picking our build apart. One guy told me we would "never" get temporary habitation. I asked for a list of things we had to do to get there and they said they would only speak to our builder or architect, despite me telling them that Ben and I are the builders. They left the site and we have not been sent any more information in over 3 weeks. Ive complained, I've called, and we just can't get any movement. Meanwhile our architect who submitted our original drawings told us the house is built perfectly to spec and is of the best he's seen. The BC officers told us we had to rip off all our Russwood cladding since spiders and rats could get inside. It's all been approved! I can't get anywhere with this and am getting really worried as our mortgage is sky high and now loan repayments are flying out the bank too... Is there anyone who knows how we can get BC to move on our completion certificate? Or does anyone have any advice here? Really stuck... GCC are terrible. Thanks. Joanna
  3. Our site has main drainage and I was considering building a small shed to house a toilet and sink, instead of the ubiquitous blue turd-is. Any hints, tips and wise words on how I plumb in a toilet to the existing drainage on a temporary basis? The proposed shed will be about 5m from the nearest inspection chamber on the plot and about 600mm above the invert level.
  4. You'll know that the one thing that characterises our build is interruption and delay. Getting fed up it with now to be honest. Main roof is nearly done - just the flat roof to do and we'll be water tight. I seem to have timed the flat roof build perfectly to coincide with the onset of the bad weather. The end in mind is to make sure that rain doesn't stop play while building the flat roof. So, a design for a plastic canopy is bubbling away in what , for me, currently passes for a brain. The design: a series of five 25mm plastic water pipe hoops attached to the wall held in place by a temporary wall plate at the top a vertical scaffold tube at the bottom (the poly pipe simply slots in to it - secured by a screw), and two wooden purlins to keep the hoops apart and steady - about a third from the top and bottom Its how to keep a grip on the plastic at the top and bottom that's exercising my little grey cells. Until I saw this.... Wiggle wire Further digging came up with Poly Track, Agra Lock and others. Any of you farmers out there who have experience with Wiggle Wire? Any gottchas ?
