  1. I need to replace some old glass mineral wool insulation in my loft. I have very reduced head height (approx 1.2m) and being a listed building I am not allowed to insulate between the rafters. I have a load of left over foil backed PIR which I was going to stick on eBay. Is there any reason not to use it between the joists on the floor? All searches seem to show PIR between the rafters and rockwool on the floor but I can't find anything which says this would be a bad idea. The loft is very well ventilated and I'll make sure I don't cover any soffit vents etc.
  2. Has anyone used Supasoft loft insulation, and if so what did you think of it?
  3. Hi, we have a section of our loft conversion which we are desperate to have signed off by the BR inspector. There are a few obstacles to this however: he may insist on thicker/deeper rafters (they are currently 4 x 2s) even if he doesn't insist on that, he may insist on 6" Celotex insulation If he insists on either of these, it renders the space quasi-unusable (it's right on the borderline right now). So my question is: I think BR doesn't hinge on depth of insulation but rather quality/U rating, is that right? If so is there any super insulation type product out there which won't bring the roof down further (ie. beyond the 4x2s) but nonetheless hit the required rating?
  4. I have two MVHR units in different loft spaces. Really kicking myself for not sticking to my original plan that they should all be easily accessible. Anyway, I had to go up there to change the filters and also the PV is playing up and tripping the MBC. That is another story. We have angled trusses above the ceiling joists (see pictures). They run at an angle of roughly 4:10 Thus the depth of the loft insulation is a bit all over the place. In the centre of the loft near the MVHR and inverters it has been trampled down to the 150mm level. At the edges it is between and above the trusses and so it is over 400mm deep. Really I just want to put a couple of metres of board either side of the hatch to access the equipment. These are the areas most trampled. The loft is almost 30m long so it is a tiny percentage of the area. The builders have attached a small board next to the PV and another is just lying next to the MVHR on the slope. I would rather put something flat, it feels like it is quite easy to slip off. What is the best way to do this? Loft legs won't help. Maybe I buy a long piece of timber and try to notch it every 600mm to the angle of the trusses? In the other loft space the joists are flat. However they fitted the ducting too close to the MVHR to change the filters easily. I got them to come back to look and possibly move the ducts only for the guy to almost come through the ceiling. I found that due to the ducting there was only one place the hatch would go. When the builders put it in they clearly found it too difficult to get a frame around all 4 sides, so didn't attach it on the side where the guy tried to stand. I could make them come back and fix it but sometimes for small things like this I just feel like life is too short.
  5. As I just realised my loft has 0 insulation. I am wondering what do you think, which way (or any alternative) would the insulation would work the best: Green - Insulate the floor where there is no room and the sides of the room Red - insulate the roof The ceiling of the room will need to be insulated in both versions Loft photos:
  6. There are quite a few rolls of rockwool insulation up in the loft that were unused. Wondered what I should do with them really. I guess the options are a. use them somewhere but where? b.leave them there as they are not in the way after all (I have never actually been in the loft!) or c. get them down and get rid of them. Views?
  7. I've asked about cellulose before, maybe on the old site. I had a quote to do my 100m squared loft with 400mm of cellulose and it was pretty damn high. I'm right in the middle of working to seal absolutely everything in my loft to make it airtight. I'm taping all the top of the stud walls, foamed all gaps and taped over the top, will be running all cables in conduit down into the stud walls and sealing around the conduit with sealant and tape and foaming any larger gaps etc. Will then use pro clima stoppas in the conduit. It's a much longer process than I ever thought it would be but it needs to be done. I can get pics if anyone wanted to see how thorough I'm being , or maybe someone might comment it's not thorough enough I could just save a few quid and go for 400mm (or higher if worth it) of rockwool. I was actually going to use the brand Rockwool unless someone else thought a different mineral wool was better? I'm doing it for sound and heat and I'll be doing it all meticulously. Any thoughts on which would be best to opt for. It's not a passive house but I am working on airtightness everywhere and improvements where possible Cheers James
