Hi all, We are early in our self build journey having just been granted planning in principle for our plot. We have an architect and have had first discussions with a broker, so the money side of things looks ok too. Cost and efficiency are big motivators as we currently live in an old house which haemorrhages both heat and money, Will also be our home for the next 30 odd years so running costs important. Have only now just started the bulk of our research as it took three years to sort the plot and didn't want to get ahead of ourselves. Will probably have questions on absolutely everything.Thanks!

Hi All - i think the filters on my mvhr unit need changing. I’ve just read the manual and it says they should be replaced every 12 months but I’ve only been in my new home 5 months and the machine sounds like it’s having to work quite hard. It’s gotten much noisier. My sustem is Vent Axia Lo Carbon Sentinel Kinetic V MVHR system. I tried to hoover the current filters this evening but it’s a really tough task with little success. Does anyone one know where I can buy replacement filters from for cheap?! I’ve looked online and they all seem really pricey. If you have to change them regularly then it’s really going to add up! Any advice would be really helpful. Also, I’ve seen online that there’s different grades of filter quality. Can you really tell the difference? Thanks

Starting to shop around for my MVHR system, to serve my little 43m2 one bedroom cottage. I did get a quote from BPC who were very good to deal with but their system was based around a unit suitable for houses up to 150m2, and whilst overcapacity may be no bad thing, perhaps I can shave a bit of money off the total cost by shopping around a bit. In an ideal world I would have a unit sized appropriate to my house and with summer bypass and high efficiency. Humidistat control might be nice as I would like this to be able to run without any human intervention if possible. I have also seen some units featuring a heating boost which is certainly interesting as a house as small as mine might just get away with being heated in this manner, but I would need to research this and compare the added cost to just sticking in some panel heaters. There are some smaller and cheaper units around but from what I have found so far these are lower efficiency (c.70%- I wonder how much this matters in real life) and mostly designed for single room applications (despite having enough overall capacity for my whole house). Any tips/pointers?
