Suggestions please on the best/most economic way to provide hot water and heating without using gas in the following situation: A 7m x 7m x 2.4m, well insulated, temporary accommodation for us while we build (max 1 year hopefully), which will ultimately be used intermittently as part craft workshop/part gym. size (approx 7m x 7m) which will ultimately be split into two rooms Walls are concrete block dry lined with 100mm insulation and OSB board Floating floor - 50mm insulation & board, insulated ceiling There will be a simple MVHR system in place to provide ventilation Living area ( to become a craft room), bedroom, shower room, small office (to become gym/workshop) Living area will have a log burning stove in 12kw solar panels on the roof ( for use with house also ultimately) Eventual use will require hot water - preferably instantaneous, as it will be used occasionally and often for shortish periods . Heat from the log burner in the craft workshop will be sufficient.

We're planning on using our attic space as a playroom and I can't work out whether the temperature will be balanced or if it's going to be too hot up there in the summer and too cold in the winter. The house is an MBC build (0.11 walls, insulated roof and slab) which is currently in build, with triple glazed alu-clad windows (which are fixed apex windows in the attic). We're putting UFH on the ground and first floor but nothing in the attic. The MVHR unit is going up here so we can add vents into this space and there will be a number of rooflights, probably double glazed. Will this be enough to create a usable temperature up here? If the whole house is 3G, are we made to put double glazed up here (to cut costs)?

eve'in all, Just spotted our underfloor heating thermostat and asked our plumber for an alternative, seemed very bulky and dated, very ugly to be honest, he left an alternative which was worse, alomost yellow/white colour. He said the list is endless and take a look on internet, does anyone have any modern ones fitted e.g. Slim, low profile, white etc? The wife is in a fluster over these she said they look like a schoool technology room from the 80's ? Cheers

After finishing my boys attic 'conversion' I now need to fine tune which detectors go where. I need 1) for attic room 2) for back bedroom ( above kitchen ) 3) landing 4) hall ( current battery one goes off when I cook steaks ) 5) kitchen ( heat obviously ) My main concern upstairs is technology catching fire. PC / tv / consoles etc on standby through the day ( 4 kids so don't even say to put everything off during the day, never going to be a realistic option ), with same downstairs but more about appliances there. Location 4 is the tricky one, but advice as to which is better, where, and hopefully why would be gratefully received. Thanks all. Edit to add : there are two bedrooms under the attic room, should I go crazy and cover those rooms too, or will the landing detector suffice?

Help anyone, just been advised by one of the tilers providing a quote that the UFH system needs to be powered and tested prior to laying floor tiles to reduce the risk of cracking. The frame is MBC with MBC laid pipes but looking to get tiles / kitchen in asap but power not expected until early December so dependancies are creating a problem. 1) is cracking really a risk for this type of insulated floor? 2) is there a way to power test / heat cycle the UFH on temporary power? 3) Any other options / ideas?
