Hi, don’t know if anyone can help me unpick this. We pulled out the gas fireplace that was previously installed and removed everything back to the original chimney breast brickwork. As we did that it became apparent that the person who installed it hacked the right angles off the fireplace brickwork. We are planning on lining the recess with Hardie board, but I am worried that where the board meets at a right angle the void behind it will render the board unstable or prone to break. I think the best option is to pack it out, but I have no idea what to pack it put with… (apart from mortar but I am concerned it won’t key in enough and wouldn’t know the correct mix for what I want, and would I have to shutter it etc…) Any help or suggestions would be great. Lots of pictures attached. The Ply is just for demo purposes

Evening all, first request for advice! I’m opening up our fireplace which was previously an open fire and have already placed a lintel for support. I’ve hit a bit of a roadblock in that the bricks inside the chimney angling up to the right do not seem to be supported by anything. On the left side they look to be resting on the one course of bricks, which I would like to remove, on the right, they sit across 3 courses of brick, 2 of which I’m looking to remove. further up, they do not seem to be interlocking with the front or back wall, just mortared to each other almost floating in the middle if I remove some of the legs. Am I safe to remove the bricks in the feet or am I in danger of causing some damage to the chimney? TIA for any comments, Rob

We moved into our house with the chimney breast bricked up and one of those electric wall mounted fireplaces installed. We want to open it up again so we have the alcove to give the room a bit more character. We have removed the plaster to see what we are working with and the lintel looks like it ends before the edge of the fireplace on the left hand side. Also, there is a gas pipe running across the middle, which we were told is capped off but we don't know where. Please help. We don't want to remove bricks only for the lintel to collapse and cause complete devastation. Also, upstairs the chimney breast has been converted to wardrobe space, I'm not sure if that makes a difference.

Hi, We had an outdoor fireplace constructed and lit it for the 1st time last weekend. It was a roaring success (if you pardon the pun!). I'm concerned that the plastered walls won't stand the test of time and intensity of heat and was wondering if anyone could recommend a suitable material to line the internal walls to give it some protection from the heat. Thanks
