Hmmmm. i have just got my FINAL quote for service connections Water is expensive .....full of zonal charges and this that and the other .. with me digging the trench on own land it still is over £2000 (but we were told to expect that last year) Gas is not too bad ...again I am digging the trench and it is coming in at £800 I just got my electric one from WPD and i nearly FELL Over ....its almost £2500 notes ! I mean all they have to do is connect 1m (yes under 4 foot) on the pavement ...same as gas and then flop an armoured cable in my waiting trench I have notices the "quote" is full of the term "contestable charge" ....i take it that means i can haggle. ...well I have already tried that today and got the old "frozen scapula" thrust at me ... Am i getting done here? ....big time?? ...or does everyone on newbuilds get a Shock with electric ..(see what i did there?) I think i will have a cold bath in Flash Floor Cleaner ...just handling that quote has left me feeling financially abused and fiscally molested ???

    Gas Meter

    I was reading a few posts in this section and the same applies with us re: our gas main is actually closer to the REAR of the property and so I have been advised the meter can go on that rear wall. this has one BIG advantage for us .. The meter location shown is 39M from the main in the road we are connecting to. Anything over 40M is classified as a "major" connection and prices go Loooopy (apparently) If we were to connect it to the front utility room wall (as you cannot run gas under a house) it would be another 17m trip around (gulp) At last a bit of luck But my real question is about the gas meter box ....well to be honest the electric one too ...I have a bricklayer starting in about 4 weeks and i need to get everything in for him....and i am presuming the 2 meter boxes are required. Due to a narrow 1.5m path at the side ..i don't really fancy a "sticky out one" Is there anyone with experience of installing a "built in one" ...I have a timber frame potton house ...(if that makes a difference Thanks in advance for any advice
  3. Got our first electricity bill the other day for which I'd had to submit the reading because the supplier we are with (Good energy) don't "do" smart meters yet. The bill seemed rather high - we knew it would be because of the current situation we are in with the window company letting us down so we are having to run fan heaters 24/7 , but it seemed even higher. So I added up the monthly totals the meter records and compared this figure to the overall consumption figure it gives - and they don't match. The month-by-month consumption comes out a lot lower than the supposed total. When I queried this our supplier says that this is why they are not yet using smart meters electronically for readings as they think there are a lot of teething issues still to be resolved & they are waiting to see which models work best (but since they themselves don't actually install meters I'm not sure how correct this is), hence why I had to physically read it and call the reading in. Anyway, naturally they want the highest figure to be right and I the lowest, but given that if the meter cannot do simple addition then indeed *both* could be wrong, Ive queried it with them and they insisted they won't check it unless I produce photographic evidence (because naturallly I'd lie over a few quids worth of electricity! Which slightly peeves me tbh ). So instead I videoed it. Currently they are "deciding if it needs to be checked or not". Has anyone else had such basic issues with a smart meter as it being unable to add up properly?
