  1. So, as our build comes closer, who has done there own groundwork? pre foundation work including trenches to receive services from the road. Our ground floor is 140m2. We are building on an old orchard so I need to fell a few apple trees and possibly a walnut. Because we have trees we have yet to find out if we need to big down to 2m instead of the 1.2m standard. Soil survey will tell us this, so is getting a digger myself before to do this? Should I buy one or hire one? As you may tell by the question, I want to do what I can myself, 1. for the experience 2. to save money. Any advise?
  2. Hi, Moved into a 1930s semi property with lead water pipes and an old capped gas line. As such planning to dig a new trench and lay a new MDPE water pipe to the correct specifications, then once signed off backfill this and get the gas company to lay the gas line in the same trench. My question is, where in the picture would you advise digging the trench? Either way it's through a concrete driveway and will pass under a rainwater drain. Itll either enter the property though a small porch or through the garage. One option is to expose the current pipes but that'll impede digging and I'm not sure if you can cut though and remove the old gas pipe even though I'm told it's "dead" and been turned off. I'm hoping at 75cm depth I'll be able to pass under the foundations and not need to drill through it. Failing that I wonder if I could come up higher once in the porch or garage and just knock out a brick or two to get into the house. I'm assuming this would be okay as long as it's insulated. Any advice appreciated! Jack
  3. Obtained a safe dig plan from uk power networks. Very annoyingly they don't include a key. Does anyone know where I can get hold of one? Specifically interesting in what the green and red lines are the diamond shapes NR .15a +sl Also, is it possible to find out for a given substation any info on the earthing system etc? Thanks in advance
  4. Planning a very minor trench excavation to bring in a new gas supply and water main. I've got the safe dig plan from my gas network SGN and looks fine for where I want to dig but just curious what some of the symbols which are not included in their key mean. Assuming 250 PE means a 250mm Polyethylene pipe? So what are 8" SI, 125 FF etc? What about the speech bubble "650943840"? Their key:
  5. Hi, I had a guy out this morning to locate the pipes that I may have mentioned on a previous thread. The pipes are as shown on our title map which is approx 1-1.5m away from where they show on the utility map. As I was almost certain this was where they were due to the map plus the position of markers above ground I have worked on a solution to get around this. The guy was also able to tell me that the top of the pipe is just over 1m deep. Would it be doable to get a couple of guys out to dig a hole this deep by hand to locate the exact top of the pipe? I am going to need to know the exact position as even 100mm will make a difference.
  6. Lo! The narrow bucket on my digger runneth over! It has had it's fill with clay, and when it has had it's fill with clay , it doth make a mess of the trench. I can't be the only person really fed up with clearing out a bucket full of clay - in my case it needs a crow bar to get it out. What I need is a cheek-less bucket. Is there such a thing? Or do I get going with a grinder?
