Hi all, we will be shortly moving into a static caravan with 3 kids and a dog. Going to be an adventure or a nightmare. we are waiting for sse to hook us up to power which could take some time. In the meantime what is the best option for powering the caravan? Would a silent generator be the answer. If so, what type requirements for a generator should I be looking at? many thanks

Hi all, looking for anyone who has some advice on how we can get a temporary water supply and power supply to our static caravan while we wait for Scottish water and sse to connect us. We are planning IBC tanks for water. (Seperate Bottled water for drinking). Will this work? Or does anyone have any other suggestions. Also for power we are planning a silent generator. But I need advice on what I should be looking for. For info our caravan is heated by gas and the cooker is also gas. Many thanks!

We have just gained planning permission to construct what will be our retirement home on land adjacent to our existing house. During the build of our new home we are looking to purchase a caravan / mobile home to live in for the duration of the build. I believe we will be able to get a new electrical and water supply that can be used by the caravan but we will not (in the caravan) be able to connect to the mains sewer. We have no prior knowledge or experience of caravans, apologies if this has been discussed before (I can’t find it) but how do caravans / mobile homes dispose of everything from dishwater to raw sewage when ‘off grid’?

Hi everyone, I have plans to build a log cabin on my croft land and I'm looking for some advice. Hopefully one of you can help me out ! If I were to build a "caravan" (log cabin) on croft land to serve as a holiday let/self catering accommodation, do I need planning permission for this ? Is it possible for me to build the caravan without planning permission and then apply for change of use to a holiday let ? Would I need a building warrant for a drainage connection and if so how do I go about getting one ? My local council is the Highland Council. I've tried my best to find these things out without contacting planning etc but no luck. Any advice would be much appreciated, thanks !

The caravan is here! My question is do we need an LPG registered gas engineer to connect up to the two 47kg LPG units? And what about when we need to change them? Or can we do this ourselves (the pigtails are already on the end of the caravan and the boiler has been serviced before we got it). For interest, the shed (ex-playhouse) to the right hand side is the outside toilet cum laundry. Fitting it out has kept him indoors happily occupied for a good couple of weekends.....

Do we need planning permission for a static caravan on site? Caravan is intended to go within 1m of boundary (certainly within 2m) but will be within the garden of the house that will be demolished. We have planning permission for the new build and are sorting out the pre-commencement conditions and tweaks needed with another application. So could ask for temporary planning permission for a caravan on that application....is it needed? I can't find anything definitive online (South Oxfordshire) but it seems we might need permission.....?

It was a tight squeeze but we got it out the opposite side of the site that it came in on. Ended up selling to the caravan mover as I kept getting messed about by other self builders. Hard to believe that it's been on site for nearly 3 years and we lived in it for 18 months. Can't say I was sad to let it go... Can start work in the back garden now (funds allowing)!

If driving past Lancaster on the M6, you see the tell-tale mushroom cloud of a nuclear explosion, that'll be me. And here's why. Advice please. The land next door to me has planning permission for stables. The owner applied for and was refused planning permission for a separate house on the same land. The subsequent appeal was rejected. The owner continues to live there in a caravan. I asked for advice from my Councillor. This is the response she got from the Head of Planning (verbatim) We are investigating it and will take any necessary enforcement action if and when a breach of planning control is clearly identified. Unfortunately [... name...] is currently using Part 4 of the General permitted Development Order to justify the caravan remaining on site. This allows for the provision on land of buildings, moveable structures, works, plant or machinery required temporarily in connection with and for the duration of operations being or to be carried out on, in, under or over that land or on land adjoining that land. Any building, structure, works, plant or machinery permitted by Class A must be removed when the works are complete. We will check to see what works [s/he] is carrying out and whether they have or need permission. If not we will take appropriate action. If the works are either permitted development, or have the benefit of planning permission then even if [s/he]is carrying out those works at a slow pace, that would be sufficient to allow [...] to remain with [his/her] caravan on the site. We did try to enforce a similar case a few years ago where we felt that the works being carried out were of such a small scale and being carried out at such a slow pace but an appeal was submitted and the council lost. We therefore have to be careful that our case is robust this time. One interpretation of the Head of Planning's response is that it seems to be OK to take 10 years to 'finish' the job because at the end of that time, the person has a right to build. What does temporary (above) mean? I am in dire need of advice on a strategy to deal with this issue. A good outcome for me would be for the applicant to build the stables, and then move out. Or apply successfully for planning permission, and remain.

We have to vacate our long term rental home in 2 months. The plan had always been to move to a static caravan on site but there's no way we are now going to have the required services installed in time. We are having to consider moving to a cheap rental flat at least for a few months and wondering if there is really any financial benefit to then buying and moving to a caravan. Anyone know if you have to pay council tax for a static? Any advice about the benefits one way or the other would be greatly appreciated.

So the time has come to get shot of the caravan after faithfully housing us for over a year, it's a Ruby Atlas Super, 12x38 ft, two bed two door model with double glazing and gas heating / HW. We bought it from a friend whose family run a local caravan park, it had got a little too out of date for their holiday clientele but was still in fine condition. However as that was private sale, not sure how to go about selling it on. Option A is to sell it to a dealer, would expect them to drive a keener deal but would perhaps be less hassle. Quite a few to choose from and even a 'webuyanycaravan.com' option! eBay is also an obvious choice, so we could put it on auction with a minimum derived from what a dealer would give us. Any other suggestions / experience? We also have a container / site office combo to sell but as that came from eBay, that's likely how it will go also.
