  1. My iwox treatment plant comes with a remote alarm light for the sir compressor. They recommend to install a 5 core 2.5mm swa to accommodate this. We only buried a 3 core some months back. What could I use that I will have any chance of getting through the gland on the tank as well as the 3 core swa? Thanks in advance
  2. I've started designing a remote alarm/air pump pressure system, prompted by this series of posts quoted from the closed Ebuild forum: Following on from the above, I decided it would be nice to have our alarm relocated with an indoor display, that would not only provide the "low pressure" and "high level" alarms at a convenient location, but with the addition of an indoor pressure display, to give early warning of sediment build up, so avoiding (hopefully) the problem that Peter reported. I have the pressure sensors, have tested them and the interface to a wireless data link that will comfortably work for 50 to 60m through walls. I have three choices. I can make the outdoor unit larger and fit a battery a solar panel, and have the indoor unit as a hand-held battery powered unit that could interrogate the external unit on request. The power demands make this arrangement impractical for giving a real-time alarm, it would rely on being interrogated to find out whether things were still OK, its major shortcoming. The next option is to have a solar powered external unit transmitting to a mains powered internal unit. This would provide continuous monitoring and alarm, at the cost of a solar powered external unit that would be relatively large (because of the battery and solar panel size) an would cost more, plus the battery would need replacement every few years. The final option is to have a mains powered unit inside and outside the house. This would probably be the best solution if there is mains power available at the treatment plant, as it would be the most reliable. In terms of power, it would use less than 1W at each end. This post is really to see if anyone is interested, as I'm making one for our build, and it's very little trouble to make one or two extra. I'm probably going to opt for mains powered at both ends, as that suits us better, but there really isn't much to choose in terms of hassle to make other types. Anyone interested?
  3. I’ve adopted a rather blasé attitude to security over the past 3 years. A statistical approach based upon not having cars that make us a target and hiding in plain sight with a house that looked like the one on street with an old sofa and fridge in the garden. I’ve come home today after the house has only been empty a couple of hours to find some things moved in the garden. My kids deny doing it and my 6 year old (not exactly a reliable witness) tells me that one of the things was not in its current position this morning. So better late than never, eh? When we moved in, the house had an alarm but whenever it got powered up it just triggered so we’ve had it switched off for 3 years. There are 4 PIRs downstairs in parts of the original house, the big box under the stairs and the control in the hallway but that was ‘destroyed’ during building works. So anyway, as it stands I have space for an alarm panel under the stairs and existing cabling (which I think is 6 core?) to 4 PIR sensors downstairs and an alarm box on the front of the house. I would need more sensors (wireless?) for other parts of the house (downstairs extension) and any door sensors. Cctv is a whole other kettle of fish I have yet to get into. So, WTF is the gen on the stuff I need to know before I speak to an alarm clown, sorry, installer?
  4. Just getting ready to pull the cables through the comms duct to the garden room from the utilities center. (45m run ) Will be a model for the main house. So far I have: 2 x CAT 6. ( 1 for the home network and one for control systems network - somewhat experimental.) 1 x 6 core phone cable. Not absolutely required but will allow me to run a phone line down there separate from the house line. 1 x 3 core flexible to carry the smoke alarm signals from the garden room smoke alarms - not sure how to organise this electrically but 3 cores should be enough even if volt free contact. 1 x 6 core alarm cable for the intruder alarm. I wonder if I should also pull in a 4 core fibre? What have I forgotten?
  5. Hi All My last first fix job is to run some 8core alarm cables to room corners, keypad locations etc. BUT, chatting to my sparky this week he said that it's now almost never done as the wireless systems have become so reliable. He said the only real need is a feed to the bell box and a fused spur for the control panel. I was just interested what others have done?
