  1. One final push today saw all the furniture and curtains put in place- a big group effort with much input from the in-laws. I'm very fortunate to have a MiL who is an ace seamstress and who has a bit of a thing about Harris Tweed. To say I'm chuffed is a bit of an understatement. It's been over four years since the concept of this project first appeared, and three years since work began in earnest. Today we finally saw the culmination of all that effort as the building site was transformed into a home. It's exactly what I imagined: cosy, welcoming, stylish. We'll be listing it on the booking websites tomorrow (most likely a combination of AirBnB and Booking.com) so that will give me the impetus needed to tackle the lengthy snagging list and major outstanding jobs, most of which are on the outside. Some of the cladding details (corners and window reveals) aren't finished yet, the soffets need to be completed, and the biggest job of all is the decking. There's also the creature comforts of WiFi and TV to sort out. I know people come to Skye to get away from it all, but I bet the first thing they will ask for is a WiFi password Once again, huge thanks to everyone in the BuildHub community who has held my hand throughout this whole project. It's a lot smaller than many other builds, but it's been exceptionally hands on with me personally tackling almost every trade, from drafting the plans to building the kit; I even got an excuse to do some digger driving a couple of weeks ago.

  4. Yep - told you there was a double garage in there somewhere ..!! I reckon I get 10-15% more brick/block laid per day with readymix on a 1:1 gang as the labourer is only loading out - no mixing, no Monday morning pigeon poo and you can normally run it over a weekend if it’s wrapped up tight. In 21 tubs in all dumped around a tub in total over 9 weeks - less than 5% wastage.

  5. Great job mate, a word if caution though..... i would not make it available on the net until you are 100% sure that its at a point where there is no outstanding reasons for guests to give you anything but a bloody good review. Your first reviews are there to stay so you want them to be good. List it on the sites but have the opening date set for when your 100% sure the important jobs will be done. Dont leave anything to chance like assuming the new wifi router will be delivered on time........ be honest in your description and your guests will be very forgiving. Gloss over something and they will drop a bombshell that's going to leave you really annoyed. It looks great and well done, i am sure it will be a big hit and bookings will flood in. Good luck.

  7. That just sounds like a rite of passage to me. Like the first time you use a chain saw. Every time AFTER the first time, you make sure your trousers are outside your boots.

  8. A few years ago my mate asked me to remove one from his pond because it was eating his fish. I managed to pick it up but it then wrapped itself round my forearm and crapped all over it. It stunk for days. I think we were both glad to be separated when I let it go a few hundred yards away.

  9. You rent the tubs and then they line with a poly bag every delivery - our supplier will do down to one tub an order but they usually like at least two - does about 400 bricks per tub.

  10. The import and manufacture of mains halogen spotlights has been passed out now in the EU. They can still sell existing stock. You can still make 12v MR16s, but these cannot directly replace LED GU10s. I would not worry about someone replacing all your LEDs in future with high powered bulbs, eventually LEDs will be the only kind of build that exists apart from for specialist applications such as oven lights.

  11. Work on a 35W GU10 for each and you won't go far wrong. Unless it is a massive house or totally overboard on the number of downlights you wont go far wrong.

  12. Ok he did a full chimney for me in reclaim with a nice corbel detail (I got the dimensions wrong at ground level.....) and finished with a reclaimed pot. It was done with Dunbrik liners too so no S/S liner to worry about. Are you using readymix mortar..??

  17. Because of all the habitual voyeurs? EDIT: That's odd, must be my writing style but it seems to fit the Parklife music. You weren't drinking the same Polish beer that I was last night? "SWMBO informs me she doesn't add "blue" stuff to the cistern but sometimes bleach. She CLEANS the bowls and adds blue stuff there. I was informed of this with the hint that I might try cleaning the loos occasionally. Amazing, I always thought a fairy did it! All the peopleSo many peopleThey all go hand in handHand in hand through their parklife"
